Putting the spotlight on filmmaking’s unsung heroes – the casting director – CASTING BY takes us on a fast-paced journey through the last half century of Hollywood history from an entirely new perspective. Pioneers like Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster were iconoclasts whose exquisite
taste and gut instincts helped to put the final nail in the coffin of the old studio system and usher in the New Hollywood. Afforded the unprecedented freedom and power of the new medium of television, they broke away from the traditional typecasting of Hollywood and brought actors like James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Robert Duvall, and Gene Hackman to the screen.
Tom Donahue combines personal narratives from countless actors and directors (including Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Lane, Jon Voight, Bette
Midler and John Travolta) with extensive archival material to reconstruct the untold tale of Hollywood’s most invisible and unheralded profession. Through an investigation of the Hollywood power dynamics that continue to belittle their work, this film seeks to grant casting directors the credit they have long been denied.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE
This feature-length documentary, tentatively entitled “Thank You For Your Service”, traces the history of America's relationship with its veterans and explores the challenges that persist with every successive war. The film focuses on the pressing issue of the day - returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan as they cope with dismantling their warrior mentality and reintegrating fully into society. These veterans have much to deal with - from PTSD to homelessness; unemployment to missing limbs; from TBI to drug addiction; lost loved ones, lost comrades, lost lives... or just feeling lost in general. We profile many of these braves citizens who put their lives on the line for the rest of us during the majors wars of the past century. We also interview those on the forefront of this discussion: psychologists and neurologists, politicians, cabinet members, military leadership, non-profit program directors, and family members. The key goal of the documentary is not just to profile those most affected, but also to shine a light on solutions that range from governmental and organizational initiatives to our broader responsibilities as American citizens to repay and empower our veterans.
Drazen (JOHN VENTIMIGLIA), Wallace (KEVIN CORRIGAN) and Ken (BABS OLUSANMOKUN) immigrated to America in search of their piece of the American Dream. Drazen and Wallace spend their days engulfed in seedy off-track betting while Ken grudgingly drives a New York cab. Bad luck and desperation bring these men together, and they are forced to fight for their very survival and their most valued prize: the right to stay.
