The New York Times: ‘This Changes Everything’ Review: Hollywood’s Men, Called to Action

A star-studded documentary about gender inequality in film and TV is equal parts history lesson and constructive criticism.

As the actress and activist Geena Davis puts it in “This Changes Everything,” a new documentary about Hollywood’s pervasive gender inequalities, each of those highly successful films with female leads (and in some cases, female filmmakers) had been expected to expand the opportunities for women, or so the media narrative went with each release.

As the staggering statistics on gender parity continue to demonstrate, though, not much has changed. No one movie can persuade an industry to suddenly reverse decades of discrimination and redistribute power to include the less powerful. “This Changes Everything” makes this point very clear, while also seeking to spark initiative. (Interestingly, the film was directed by a man, Tom Donahue. Several women serve as executive producers, including Davis.)
