DARWIN’S AMERICA

CAN MUSIC AND COMEDY OPEN PEOPLE TO IDEAS IN WAYS THAT DRY ACADEMIC DEBATE CANNOT?

features the acclaimed entertainer Baba Brinkman, a rap artist who brilliantly blends Hip Hop, comedy, and science into one-man shows that are at once lyrical, thought-provoking, and hilarious. In The Rap Guide to Evolution (nominated for a Drama Desk award in 2012), Baba charts the history of Rap and the black urban experience as well as how it directly relates to Evolution and Evolutionary Psychology. It’s a revelatory work that is daring, biting, and uniquely contextualizes and contemporizes the perpetual debate concerning evolution.

CAN MUSIC AND COMEDY OPEN PEOPLE TO IDEAS IN WAYS THAT DRY ACADEMIC DEBATE CANNOT?

In Darwin’s America, Baba’s show is taken on the road to find out if he can shift the mindset of the masses. Through the performance, call and response, one-on-one conversations, man-on-the-street interviews and some awe-inspiring freestyle rap, Darwin’s Americagoes deep inside America’s heartland and ask the questions:

CAN AN ENTERTAINING PERFORMANCE ABOUT SCIENCE AND EVOLUTION ACTUALLY MOVE PEOPLE AWAY FROM THEIR ENTRENCHED POSITIONS?

CAN PROVOCATION AND HUMOUR SUCCEED WHERE TYPICAL METHODS HAVE FAILED?

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO CURE AMERICA’S “DARWIN PROBLEM”?

At the heart of Baba’s performance is a deep connection to the science. The world’s only peer-reviewed rap, Baba’s show has been vetted by the world’s most preeminent evolutionary biologists. In fact, as Baba describes in one telling song, “Performance, Feedback, Revision”, the development of the show itself is an evolutionary process.

While Darwin’s America is respectful to the faith-based perspective, it will also clearly lay out the basics of the science, connect it to the underpinnings of all life sciences, and demonstrate the harmful implications of science denial.

Beard's Creek

Set in the primal and breathtaking swamps of the American Deep South, ”Beard’s Creek” revolves around three unruly children and the love-starved teenage sister who has reluctantly raised them since their mother’s death. Alienated from the adults around them, the children have created a secret kingdom in the swamps, which they fiercely protect from the adult world. When they find a murdered corpse in the swampwaters, they decide to keep their discovery a secret. But the seductive killer figures out what they’ve done and stalks them, charming his way into the heart of their older sister to get what he wants.

Luke (11), Ellie (9), and Watley (6) Flynn live with their older sister Judith (19) and their father, Carson, in a run down trailer park adjacent a swamp near Beard’s Creek, Georgia. Since their mother died two years before and their father retreated into a deep depression, Judith has supported the family by waitressing at the local diner. Judith is bitter over the situation and openly resents having to care for her siblings. She often escapes into her own kind of fantasy, dreaming and planning for the day when she can leave her responsibilities, and be carried off by a man who will love and care for her.

Ignored and neglected by the adult world, and wounded by their mother’s death and father’s withdrawal, the younger Flynn children form an inner circle; a secret world which only they can enter, and in which the richness of their fantasies makes their lives bearable. Within the deep, lush swampland, unreachable by adults, is their clubhouse and the primal, unfathomable nether-land is the perfect mute witness to their secret adventures.

Luke, deeply scarred by his mother’s death and in constant trouble, leads his siblings to create a special world where they are untouchable. This world is threatened when Luke finds the body of a murdered beautiful woman in the swamp. Afraid that Luke may be arrested for the murder, the three children make a pact to hide the body and tell no one. But what they don’t know is that the real killer is not far, searching for a valuable key that he left on the body. When the murderer figures out the children have hidden the body and have the key, he seduces Judith in order to get close to her family and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
